Frequently Asked Questions

What will Saint James Place look like when it opens in 2016?
The Sanctuary will become a performing arts space, seating about 300 people in the church’s original pews (modified for comfort).  It will also retain its original stained glass windows and many features of the historic church, while offering state-of-the-art lighting and other theater equipment as well as dressing rooms and a green room for performers.

How will it be different from the original church?

The Sanctuary and Parish House will be a full-time secular place, available for both arts groups and the community to gather year-round.  There are no plans at present for religious services to be held there.

Who is it for?
Saint James Place will be a home for small to mid-size Berkshire County arts groups looking for affordable rehearsal, performance, and/or office space.  It will also be gathering place for the Great Barrington community to view performances, and attend lectures, classes, and other events throughout the year.

What about the original St. James Episcopal Church congregation?

In 2008, the rear stone wall partially collapsed at St. James Church, forcing the congregation to seek a new place for its services.  Crissey Farm of Great Barrington offered its large reception hall to St. James parishioners, and in 2010, St. George’s Episcopal Church of Lee joined them for Sunday worship services.  After St. George’s sold their building in Lee in 2011, the two churches merged to become Grace Church, which continues to worship at Crissey Farm.

Who owns and manages Saint James Place?
A board of directors owns and operates Saint James Place, Inc. a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, created in 2010 to restore the buildings and property.

How much money does Saint James Place need to finish the renovation?

Saint James Place still needs to raise roughly $2 – 2 ½ million to complete construction and open in 2016.  We need the community’s help to do it, and we welcome your help.  You will hear more about our fundraising needs in the months to come.

Can I get married at Saint James Place?
Yes, Saint James Place will offer both ceremony and reception space on a limited basis throughout the year with full access to a commercial grade kitchen.  Couples can also hold outdoor ceremonies on the Saint James Place grounds if they wish, with space available for a tent.
