Community
Installed in 1870, the magnificent bell in our tower carries the inscription that so rightly reflects the mission of Saint James Place in the community: “Gather the People.” This simple phrase inspires us to offer our beautiful building as a space for community to gather, for audiences of all ages to enjoy world-class performances by local, national and international artists, and where local arts & culture organizations can flourish and grow.

How do we support our community?
The People’s Pantry of Great Barrington has a permanent home here. The Pantry began in 1999 in the garage of the St. James Place church and continues today on the Taconic Street side of our building with its own entrance and plenty of space for storage, shelving, and shoppers. The Pantry’s mission is to respectfully serve our neighbors experiencing food insecurity by distributing healthy food, locally sourced whenever feasible and we’re honored to support them.
Our arts and culture hub is a flexible home for our arts partners. We provide office space, rehearsal space, and performance space at reasonable rates, allowing each organization the freedom to concentrate on their work.
We open our doors for free family events during December’s holiday season, including Charlie’s Model Trains and Vocalis Youth Choir’s concert on the evening of the Southern Berkshire Chamber’s Shop, Sip & Stroll. With the annual holiday performance of the Berkshire Lyric Chorus, along with the Delightful & Delectable Holiday Market each year as well, Saint James Place is your home for the holidays!
ArtWeek in May features free interactive performances for the whole family, with programs from the Aston Magna Music Festival, Great Barrington Public Theater, and more.
How do we partner with area nonprofits?
Saint James Places lifts up our arts and culture community. We work with fellow nonprofits to provide outstanding affordable space to accommodate their audiences and elevate their profiles. A few examples:
Festival Latino
The Town of Great Barrington and Saint James Place welcome Festival Latino of the Berkshires every September. Festival Latino hosts local and international Latino performers and offer outdoor food and activities, and indoor performance on the stage of our largest performance room, The Sanctuary.
WEB Du Bois Freedom Center
WEB Du Bois Freedom Center celebrates the inspirational legacy of W.E.B. Du Bois, and has hosted sold-out lectures and symposiums in our Sanctuary Space, with post-presentation meet-and-greet receptions in our Great Hall.
The Schumacher Center for New Economics
The Schumacher Center for New Economics, committed to finding new and equitable means of community sharing, delivers many of their thought-provoking lectures here, with one-on-one post-presentation meet-and-greet activities.
Saint James Place has rental space for your nonprofit event, community gathering, meeting or retreat.
